Who knew?

“Songwriter” is my fourth album, and will be my first album in 10 years. If you would have checked with me a year ago, I would have not mentioned it in my plans. I took a few years off from music all together for various reasons, mostly just because I had been doing it a long time, and I didn’t seem to have it in me any more. But I kept writing songs here and there, and one day last winter I got out the ole’ guitar, and something clicked.
It bears mentioning that I had begun hanging out at The Beat Coffeeshop in Uptown, Minneapolis, and going to The Church in Uptown, (held at The Beat on Sunday afternoons), and was inspired by an amazing group of young people who were all playing music there.
Soon enough I played a couple of my songs at Church, did a show at The Beat, and the next thing I knew, they had me hosting a Songwriters night there every month. (Man they sure saw me coming!) Continuing to hear all these great young artists and their ideas only made matters worse, and not only was I writing more again, but thumbing through a 30 year catalog of my songs and listening to old recordings and demos.
The more I did this, the more I found stuff that I had not used on other projects for some reason or another, and realized there were several songs I’d written since I’d recorded anything. I can’t take you back to the eureka moment, but somewhere in there I guess I just looked up and said “I think I’ll make an album.”
It was also dawning on me all of the reasons I loved playing the acoustic guitar and singing in the first place. The twinkle in my eye just for doing it just for the fun of it was back.
So, off we went to the studio, and now we have it. With the help of my friends, whom I will properly introduce on another page, “Songwriter” is done. Now, I guess we’ll make a few copies of it, and see what happens!
